Andrzej Gutek passed away on May 30, 2015. He was a mathematician and an artist. His MS in Mathematics (1974) and PhD in Topology (1981) were from the University of Selesia in Kotowice, Poland. He published papers in Topology, Functional Analysis, and the relationship between Mathematics and Art. Andrzej spent the 2000/2001 academic year at the University of Dschang in Cameroon as a Fulbright scholar. He co-authored, with Carol Ventura, two articles about the crafts of Cameroon.

In the summer of 2006 Andrzej participated in a week long "Maya Mathematics" course in Guatemala. The presenters were Christopher Powell and Ed Barnhart, Director of the Maya Exploration Center.

In the summer of 2007 Andrzej participated in a week long "Inca Mathematics" workshop in Peru. Participants learned about khipu, visited Cusco and Sacsayhuaman, as well as Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley. In the summer of 2008 he visited the lake Titicaca region, including Tiahuanaco and the Island of the Sun.

Carol Ventura has very interesting books about Maya backstrap weaving and tapestry crochet in Guatemala.
Proyecto Lingüístico Francisco Marroquín, a language school in Antigua, publishes books and dictionaries of Maya languages. One can learn Spanish and several Maya languages there.
